Due to the increasing networking of the global economy and the growing availability of complex manufacturing processes as well as globalized trade relations, there is a growing motivation and ability for product piracy and unfair trade. This is reflected in the constantly rising numbers of seizures of counterfeit and illegal products. In order to implement protective measures precisely and effectively, companies need help in selecting and combining the appropriate measures from different areas, depending on the threat in question. Protective measures offered on the market a priori only represent part of a solution. A closed protection concept requires a sensible combination of individual measures and their successful evaluation. For example, uncoordinated individual technical and legal measures are not sufficient to ensure comprehensive protection against product piracy and illegal trade. In order to achieve effective protection, it is necessary to identify those measures that complement each other out of a large number. It is important to ensure that the measures do not restrict each other's benefits. DIN 66405 describes a guideline to support affected companies in the development and introduction of suitable protection concepts against product piracy, unfair imitation and trade in illegal goods.
