Standard DIN 58197-4 is part of a series of standards which specifies minimum requirements for optical coatings. This part of DIN 58197 applies to antireflecting layers that are used in optics. The purpose of this standard is to define minimum requirements for the optical effects and the resistance to mechanical, chemical and climatic stresses of these layers. This enables the user to start with concrete figures, while the manufacturer of the thin layers remains free to select the materials and the production method. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 027-01-03 AA "Dünne Schichten für die Optik" ("Optical coatings") at DIN.
