For many analyses and tests, such as the determination of extractable components according to DIN EN ISO 6427, a large specific surface area of the sample is necessary. For this reason, plastic products must often be reduced in size. The methods described in this standard are suitable for the size reduction of moulding compounds, semi-finished and finished plastic products. Size reduction can consist of preliminary and final size reduction of the product. The selection of the suitable process depends on the type of product to be reduced in size, the aim of the investigation and the desired fineness of the broken material. Within the scope of this standard it is not possible to specify the appropriate instrument for each specific test task. This standard is intended to supplement the information on the most suitable sample size reduction, which is often insufficient in many standards and directives, and to provide information on the various possibilities of reducing the size of samples for analytical purposes. The committee responsible for this standard is Working Committee NA 054-01-03 AA "Physikalische, rheologische und analytische Prüfungen" ("Physical, rheological and analytical test methods") at DIN Standards Committee Plastics (FNK).
