Overview

This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 062-06-61 AA "Prüfung von Schmierölen, sonstigen Ölen und Paraffinen" ("Testing of lubricating oils, other oils and paraffin") at the Standardization Committee for Petroleum, Fuels, Lubricants and Related Products (FAM) of the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP). This document specifies a method for determination of the sulfated ash content of mineral oils. For unalloyed oils, the determination of sulfated ash serves the assessment of the purity level. For alloyed oils with metalorganic additives, the sulfated ash provides information about the total proportion of the additives. For waste oils, the determination of the sulfated ash is to be critically evaluated. An increase of ash in relation to fresh oil can, for instance, be based on the development of abrasion, chemical reactions from aging products with metals or on the presence of foreign materials. An interpretation of these values is only possible after an analysis of the ash components. For this, the method included in this standard can serve as a decomposition method.
