This standard applies to chromate zinc-alloy coatings on ferrous materials containing nickel or iron alloy components. It specifies minimum corrosion resistances for various service condition numbers as well as the corresponding localized minimum coating layer thicknesses required. The coatings or coating systems are used as protection against corrosion and/or for cosmetic/decorative purposes. This standard does not apply to semi-finished products. Requirements on dimensions of mechanical fasteners are specified in DIN EN ISO 4042. Requirements for threads on individual components shall be subject to special agreement. Cr(VI)-free passivated and sealed zinc and zinc-alloy coatings are defined in DIN 50979. The responsible German standardization committee is NA 062-01-76 AA "Galvanische Überzüge" ("Electrodeposited coatings") of the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP).
