This standard specifies a method for the examination of extractable organically bound halogens amenable to extraction (EOX) in sludges and sediments. The content of organically bound halogens amenable to extraction is determined and given as a mass fraction (chlorine). The lower limit of application is 0,2 mg of chlorine per kg of dry mass. Volatile and semi-volatile organic halogen compounds are not completely covered. The applicability of the method to other solids is not excluded; but it shall be assessed in the individual case. In comparison with DIN 38414-17:1989-11, the most important change is the deletion of the method according to Wickbold. Drying can be carried out optionally according to DIN 38414-22 "German standard methods for the examination of water, waste water and sludge - Sludge and sediments (group S) - Part 22: Determination of dry residue by freezing and preparation of the freeze dried mass of sludge (S 22)" and/or DIN 19747 "Investigation of solids - Pre-treatment, preparation and processing of samples for chemical, biological and physical investigations". The extraction time shall be 100 extraction cycles (about 8 hours) minimum. During the total analysis time, the temperature in the combustion chamber shall be 950 °C minimum. Determination of purgeable organically bound halogens (POX) has been omitted. This document has been prepared by Subcommittee NA 119-01-03-04 UA "Schlamm und Sedimente" ("Sludge and sediments") of Working Committee NA 119-01-03 AA "Wasseruntersuchung" ("Water examination") at DIN Standards Committee Water Practice (NAW).
