Key word "Cost factor consumable materials for office machines" - in linguistic usage these include toner cartridges. An alternative for toner cartridges of the original equipment manufacturer are refilled toner modules, when they meet the minimum requirements during the refilling process and pass tests for print quality and productiveness. This also includes the verification that health-related properties of the toner have been tested with respect to legal provisions and that when used as intended no risks to heath result from the toner. DIN 33870:2001 has been fundamentally revised with the publication of the standard DIN 33870-1. As a result, information about the filling process and minimum information for documentation have been supplemented and ISO/IEC 19752 has been taken into account. With the expansion of the extent of testing new test templates have been developed are included in the standard in digital form. Properties and functions after filling as well as tests for verification of image-describing quality aspects and the productiveness of the toner modules are specified. At the same time, environmental and sustainability aspects are taken into account. The purpose of this document is to specify minimum requirements for a consistent print quality with the intention of ensuring undisturbed functionality over the total service life of the toner modules. In order to adapt to market developments to be able to offer professionally filled toner modules also for colour printers, DIN published as an interim solution a DIN Technical Report, which includes both the requirements and tests for monochrome and colour toner modules, see DIN Technical Report 155:2007-09. The standardization project DIN 33870-2, which is currently under preparation will in the near future complete the DIN 33870 standard series with the main title "Requirements and tests for the preparation of refilled toner modules for electrophotographical printers, copiers and facsimile machines": Part 1: Monochrome; with CD ROM Part 2: 4-Colour-printers; with CD-ROM. Following publication of DIN 33870-2 the DIN Technical Report 155 can be withdrawn and the Blue Angel Basic Award Criteria (RAL-UZ 55) provided on a wide and tried and tested normative basis. DIN 33870 is revised in close collaboration with the Umweltbundesamt (Germany's main environmental protection agency). The committee responsible for this standard is NA 043-01-28 AA "Bürogeräte" ("Office machines") at DIN.
