Mine workers in mines have to be supplied with fresh air. The air flows are guided and controlled by means of air regulation systems. Air doors are openings in these structures that are used for the passage of people (travel way) or for production (haulage tracks). This standard specifies the safety requirements for the construction and operation of airlocks in underground coal mining. The purpose of airlocks is to ensure the planned and stable distribution of air in the mine workings by throttling air currents without impairing production and travel in the airway concerned. The air flow and pressure distribution shall not change significantly when the airlock doors are operated. The national interests in the preparation of the standard have been represented by the committee NA 060-15-06 AA "Bewetterungsanlagen" ("Mine ventilation systems") at the Section Mining equipment of DIN Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM). Representatives of the manufacturers and users of mine ventilation systems and of the employers' liability insurance associations were involved in the preparation.
