The marking on roof on fire engines serves for identification and guidance from greater heights. The necessity of marking on roof for guidance from greater heights was an important finding from the forest fire disaster in the Lueneburg Heath in August 1975. The marking on roof usually consists of the registration number of the respective vehicle. DIN 14502-3 and the decrees of individual federal states contain further requirements relating to markings on roof. Examples of markings on roof are given in an Annex to the standard. The standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 031-04-01 AA "Begriffe und Bildzeichen" ("Terms and pictograms") at the DIN Standards Committee Firefighting and Fire Protection (FNFW).
