Overview

This standard applies for containers for liquid, granulated and powdered goods in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 for the purpose of food production, transported unpackaged and specifies requirements for the technical characteristics, that is materials and surfaces, as well as constructive features of containers for foodstuffs. Furthermore, the standard specifies requirements which are required for the planning and construction of new food containers for food hygiene reasons. Furthermore, DIN 10502-1 specifies checkpoints for the assessment of food containers in the context of the maintenance and repair which shall judged from the hygiene aspect at containers already in use. Moreover, the standard specifies requirements for marking, evidence of the use and identification of containers for foodstuffs. DIN 10502-1 serves all parties involved in the transport within the food chain, like manufacturers of containers, food producers, transport operators, trade and food control. It describes a consistent approach to the prerequisites and measures needed for liquid, granulated and powdered foodstuffs from a hygienic point of view as well as the status of the respective participants. A coordinated approach supports the compliance of food-related specifications and facilitates the effort during the execution of the transport. Moreover, costs can be reduced by practicable handling. Suitable containers and the proper execution of food transports are prerequisites for the maintenance of the harmlessness of foodstuffs and finally serve the protection of consumers. The body responsible for this standard is NA 057-02-01-18 AK "Transportbehälter für Lebensmittel" ("Containers for foodstuffs") at DIN.
