This book summarizes standards from a wide-ranging and diverse field:  With the vast selection of standards, to tries to do justice to the many subtopics contained within the broader topic of information and documentation. In over 800 pages and 27 up-to-date documents, the book providers the user with extensive knowledge on the individual subject areas.

Newly included in the 5th edition are documents on object preserving digitization, transcription and impact measurement. With a total of 14 standards included for the first time and three updated standards, this edition is full of important new features.

The number of new documents alone means that the 5th edition of “Information and documentation” provides an indispensable wealth of up-to-date knowledge for people in archive and library construction as well as the sciences of transcription, digitization and coding. The new 5th edition of this DIN Media handbook includes:
 

• New standards
  With the publication of DIN 31640 in 2023, a standard was created that defined the requirements for measurement results in the area of online use of digital offerings from archives, libraries and museums. ISO 23527, which came out in 2022, on the topic of research activity identifiers (RAiD) is also a relatively fresh standard that has made its way into this collection of standards. ISO 24229 on codes for written language conversion systems is also dated 2022. These new national and international documents are a valuable and highly topical addition to the book.
   
• Established documents
  Documents that are particularly important for the subject area such as DIN 67700 “Constructing libraries and archives — Requirements and recommendations for planning” and DIN EN ISO 3166-1 on country codes are still to be found in this extensive collection of documents.
   

There are also many documents that have been editorially and technically revised in the new DIN Handbook 343, which due to its scope and considered selection, is an essential collection for library construction, digitization, coding and transcriptions.
