This Technical Specification deals with safety requirements for equipment covered by the scope of DIN EN 61010-1 (VDE 0411-1) which is used by children at the age of 3 to 16 years in educational establishments under supervision of the responsible body. It is very likely that children put parts and materials through openings into the interior of electrical equipment. As a consequence and in comparison to the general laboratory use, stricter measures against touching dangerous active parts are necessary in educational establishments. Furthermore, the temperatures of parts accessible to children should be lower than those of equipment which is only operated by adults. Ergonomic considerations and mechanical risks shall be discussed in regard to anthropomorphic dimensions of children instead of adults. Requirements for equipment used by children shall also consider any reasonably foreseeable misuse and the foreseeable behaviour of children. The responsible committee is K 911 "Sicherheitsanforderungen an elektrische einschließlich elektronische Geräte für das Messen, Steuern und Regeln" ("Safety requirements for electrical including electronic equipment for measurement and control") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
