Short description
The standard sets maximum immission values (MI values) for fluorides. They serve to protect farm animals. As a result of their high feed intake, including soil intake by grazing animals, and the fact that they are kept for several years, dairy cows are more likely to ingest harmful amounts of fluoride than other farm animals. The most sensitive indicator of long-term increased fluoride intake is dental development disorders, which lead to a patchy brown colouration of the permanent teeth as a result of enamel defects. The standard is addressed in particular to persons who produce feed for the farm animal species mentioned before, keep and feed these farm animal species or handle the food they produce. It is also aimed at companies that emit fluorides into the environment in connection with their business activities.
