Overview

To take the market trend for lightweight wood-based materials into account, two new plate Types LP1 and LP2 with a low density are introduced in this European Technical Specification. At present, density is not taken into account in European and International Standards. It specifies the requirements for uncoated particleboards for use in dry conditions in non-load-bearing applications with density below 600 kg/m3. The Technical Specification applies to particleboard which is mostly homogenous and continuous in its composition and which does not contain hollow spaces, chambers or other type of cavities which can be encountered as honeycombs in sandwich panels or as tubes in extruded boards. The Technical Specification does not apply to extruded particleboards (see DIN EN 14755), flax boards (see DIN EN15197) and sandwich panels. Typical applications for lightweight boards are in furniture and non-structural applications, for instance in doors or packaging. The body responsible for this Technical Specification is NA 042-02-15 AA "Holzwerkstoffe - Spiegelausschuss zu CEN/TC 112 und ISO/TC 89" ("Wood-based panels - Mirror committee for CEN/TC 112 and ISO/TC 89") at DIN.
