Currently, the identification of scintillation detectors is at the discretion of manufacturers and they largely give preference to concise designations based on trade names. The identification is complex; it covers detector type, scintillator material, geometry, and dimensions of the scintillation detector, materials for enclosures and windows, type and dimensions of the photo-electron multiplier tube or photodiode, and electronic or other auxiliary units, if any. This standard gives guidance for the uniform identification of scintillation detectors and standard dimensions. It is applicable to all types of solid organic or inorganic scintillators used in detectors for scintillation counting and spectrometry. This standard is also intended to standardize the dimensions of the scintillators themselves in order to support exchangeability of the scintillators and comparability of measurements carried out with built-in scintillators. The responsible committee is DKE/K 967 "Mess-, Steuer- und Regelungstechnik im Zusammenhang mit ionisierender Strahlung" ("Measuring, control and regulatory technology in connection with ionizing radiation") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
