This document (EN ISO 14268:2012) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 289 "Leather", the secretariat of which is held by UNI, in collaboration with Technical Committee "International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies" (IULTCS). The responsible German committee is Working Committee NA 062-05-51 AA "Anforderungen und physikalische Prüfverfahren für Leder und seine Ausgangsprodukte" ("Requirements and physical test methods of leather and ...") at the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP) at DIN. This International Standard specifies a method for determining the water vapour permeability of leather and provides alternative methods of sample preparation. The test piece is clamped over the opening of a container which contains a solid desiccant and is placed in a strong current of air in a standard atmosphere. The air inside the container is constantly agitated by the desiccant which is kept in motion by the rotation of the container. The container is weighed at the start and the end of the test and the mass of moisture which has been absorbed by the desiccant is determined from the difference. This standard differs from DIN EN ISO 14268:2003 as follows: a) 5.2 specifies the preferred method of sample preparation if no pre-treatment is specifically required by the customer; b) 5.3 specifies that the test specimens are to be conditioned before carrying out the test; c) 6.3 describes the sealing with beeswax, where necessary; d) in Annex A, addresses and sources of apparatus have been updated; e) Annex ZA has been deleted.
