The main purpose of this International Standard is to formally represent the content and hierarchical structure of healthcare classification systems in a markup language for the safe exchange of data between organizations and dissimilar software products. The scope of healthcare classification systems covered by this International Standard encompasses terminologies, and is constrained to traditional paper-based systems (like ICD-10) and compositional systems built according to categorical structures and thesaurus (like ICNP). This International Standard is intended for representation of textual information, hierarchical structures, inclusion or exclusion criteria, and codes. It is not intended to cover any formal representation, either for definition of concepts or for specification of classification rules. Systems with such formal specifications can at best be partially represented using this standard, and are hence out of scope. This standard differs from DIN EN 14463:2008-02 as follows: a) the status has been changed to that of an International Standard; b) clause 4 "Terms and definitions" has been deleted; c) the standard has been translated into German; d) the standard has been editorially revised. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 063-07-03 AA "Terminologie" ("Terminology") at DIN.
