This International Standard provides general and safety requirements for programmable components used in products covered by IEC 61347. The requirements of this standard are only applicable to the programmable components (including its embedded software) in the electronic lamp controlgear. For other electric/electronic circuits and their components in the electronic lamp controlgear, the requirements of IEC 61347 series apply. In general, the principle of two barriers is used to protect safety; for example, when protecting against electric shock hazards. Consequently, a single fault condition or abnormal operation of the electrical equipment may not result in a dangerous situation. Until recently, two barriers of protection were implemented in conventional hardware in the technology. Examples include the design with basic insulation and additional insulation between active live parts and accessible parts, and the equipment with basic insulation combined with the disconnection of the power supply by means of a fuse. However, nowadays programmable components (with embedded software) may be used as a measure of protection under normal conditions, single fault conditions and/or abnormal operation. This first edition is based on definitions and specifications from IEC 60730-1 and IEC 60335-1, adapted for electronic control gear for lamps. In addition to this standard, the relevant safety standards of IEC/TC 34 apply. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 521.3 "Geräte für Lampen" ("Auxiliaries for lamps") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
