Overview

This International Standard specifies the technical characteristics and methods of testing for shipborne equipment for long-range identification and tracking (LRIT). LRIT information such as identification of the transmitting ship, position, date and time are transferred to LRIT data centres by satellite 4 times daily using recognised service providers. The standard describes the requirements of the "International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea" (SOLAS) which has been adopted through the "International Maritime Organization" (IMO). Shipborne equipment for long-range identification and tracking demonstrate conformity with SOLAS V/19-1.6 when they have been tested in accordance with this standard and meet the requirements. The responsible committee is DKE/K 738 "Elektronische Navigationsinstrumente" ("Electronic navigation instruments") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
