This standard specifies launch condition requirements used for measuring attenuation in passive multimode components and in installed fibre-optic cabling systems. The fibre types addressed here are category A1a (50 µm/125 µm) and A1b (62,5 µm/125 µm) multimode fibres, as specified in IEC 60793-2-10. The nominal test wavelengths are 850 nm and 1 300 nm. Attenuation measurements using other categories and/or wavelengths of multi-mode fibres can be carried out according to the basic approaches of this document; however, the source conditions and wavelengths for the other categories are not sufficiently defined here. The standard provides fibre and cable manufacturers, assemblers and test laboratories with security regarding the definition of the test and serves as a reference for quality assurance. The responsible Committee is K 412 "Kommunikationskabel (Kabel, Leitungen, Wellenleiter, Lichtwellenleiter, Komponenten, Zubehör und Anlagentechnik für die Nachrichten- und Informationsübertragung)" ("Communication cables (Cables, wires, waveguides, optical fibres, components, accessories and systems engineering for telecommunication and transmission of information)") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
