Overview

This International Standard specifies the minimum operational and performance requirements and test methods for electronic chart systems (ECS) in 3 classes of ECS and therewith different levels of navigational functionality. In order to achieve conformity with higher classes, additional backup-arrangements may be required to ensure safe navigation in the event of an ECS failure. ECSs were designed for use as navigation information systems on sea going vessels not required to comply with Chapter V of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). If the full functionality of the electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) according to IEC 61174 is considered to be unnecessary, ECS may be suitable for a navigation information system for certain types of sea going vessels. The responsible Committee is K 738 "Elektronische Navigationsinstrumente" ("Electronic navigation equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
