Suitable monitors shall be used for detection of illicit or unintended transportation of nuclear or other radioactive materials. This standard is applicable for installed monitors designed to detect special nuclear and other radioactive materials by their emitted gamma and/or neutron radiation. The monitors are used to monitor vehicles, cargo containers, people, or packages and are typically located at national and international borders. They may be used, however, at any location where there is a need for this type of monitoring. ((Figure) Figure 1 - Installed monitor at a national border (source: Thermo Fisher Scientific Messtechnik GmbH, Erlangen)) ((Figure) Figure 2 - Package sorting system with installed monitors (source: IEC Central Office, Geneva)). The selection of the location and the configuration of the monitoring system on each site need to be optimized to achieve the best performance. This is, however, outside the scope of this standard. The responsible committee is Joint Subcommittee GUK 967.2 "Aktivitätsmessgeräte für den Strahlenschutz" ("Activity meters for radiation protection") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE, Joint Committee with the Radiology Standards Committee (NAR) at DIN.
