Compact 40 Gbit/s optical sub-assembly (OSA) modules are used to convert electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa. This part of IEC 62148 applies to the physical interface of the compact 40 Gbit/s OSA modules. These modules are designed for the fiber optic LC connectors specified in IEC 61754-20 and are intended for use in transceivers with a transmission speed of 40 Gbit/s and higher. This part of IEC 62148 addresses the requirements for serial physical interfaces of 40 Gbit/s transmit and receive devices for use with LC connector interfaces. The purpose of this standard is to adequately specify the physical requirements of optical transmitters and receivers that will enable mechanical interchangeability of transmitters and receivers complying with this standard both at the PCB level and for any panel-mounting requirement. The standard thus offers investment security for manufacturers, users and testing laboratories. The responsible committee is Subcommittee UK 412.2 "Komponenten für Kommunikationskabelanlagen" ("Components for communication cabling systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
