Overview

This document applies to electronic compasses for mobile electronic equipment for use as microsystem components in various applications of modern communication and information technology. Electronic compasses are called "e-compasses" for short. Types of e-compasses are: 2-axis e-compasses, 3-axis e-compasses, 6-axis e-compasses, etcetera; all of which are covered by this document. An e-compass consists of the following units: - magnetic sensor unit; - acceleration sensor unit; - signal processing unit; - peripheral hardware units; - peripheral software units. In some cases, an e-compass does not contain an acceleration sensor unit and/or peripheral hardware unit. This document defines terms, definitions, essential ratings and characteristics, and measuring methods of electronic compasses. This standard applies to electronic compasses composed of magnetic sensors and acceleration sensors, or magnetic sensors alone. For marine electronic compasses, see ISO 11606. The responsible committee is DKE/K 631 "Halbleiterbaulemente" ("Semiconductor devices") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
