This part of IEC 61753 contains the minimum test and measurement requirements and severity levels that a passive chromatic dispersion compensator (PCDC) using virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) shall satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting the IEC standard, category C-controlled environments. Generally, PCDCs are used to reduce the magnitude of chromatic dispersion (CD) between regenerators by adding CD to the span that has a sign opposite to the total CD of the fibre cable and components. The requirements cover non-connectorized PCDCs used in single-channel transmission and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission in single-mode fibres (IEC 60793-2-50 B1/B2/B4). The standard contains the minimum requirements, details as well as severity levels for various tests. Thus, the standard provides manufacturers and users with investment security and test laboratories and manufacturers with detailed information on testing. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 412.7 "LWL-Verbindungstechnik und passive optische Komponenten" ("Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive optical components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
