Overview

This part is a practice-oriented standard for the testing of fibre optic patch cables with cylindrical ferrule connectors. Patch cables are intended to interconnect active components or to connect active components to fibre optic transmission lines. They present a wear part and thus represent a failure-relevant part in optical fibre communication systems. This cabling is present in many areas of today's communication technology. Mobile/cellular phone calls are transferred via fibre optic routes from the transmitter and receiver stations to landlines; the connections of the network nodes of the telecommunication network and also DSL and data highways would be impossible without these fast transmission lines. In order to satisfy the demand for bandwidths of companies and private users, entire computer centres are being equipped with more and more parallel multimode routes. The currently introduced fibre-to-the-home projects, by which these glass fibre networks are extended to the end user, increase the range of bandwidth necessary in the computer centre. This makes it even more important to ensure quality of the passive optical network components present in this environment. This part of IEC 61753 specifies the test requirements for finished cable assemblies for use as patch cords, work area cords and equipment cords for applications in an uncontrolled environment according to IEC 61753-1 where the connectors already comply with the category C requirements of IEC 61753-1. This specification deals with simplex and duplex fibre optic cables terminated at each end of cable with non-angled (PC) or angled (APC) single-mode fibre optic connectors with cylindrical ferrules. The wavelength of operation is between 1 260 nm and 1 625 nm. The standard provides manufacturers and test laboratories with security regarding the specification of the test and serves as a reference for quality assurance. The standards for the performance (IEC 61753) and the CENELEC standards of the EN 50377 series refer to the standards of the IEC 61300 series. The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 412.7 "LWL-Verbindungstechnik und passive optische Komponenten" ("Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive optical components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
