This part of IEC 61753-042-2 contains the minimum initial test and measurement requirements and severities which plug-pigtail style and plug-receptacle style OTDR reflecting devices need to satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting the requirements of category C (controlled environments), as defined in Annex A of IEC 61753-1. They are also used for the monitoring of optical fibres transmitting communication light signals and are optical filters where communication light signals can pass through but cuts off any other test light from the ports of the optical network in front of which they are installed. The standard contains the test plan for the plug-pigtail style and the plug-receptacle style. Consequently, the standard offers investment security for manufacturers and users and provides test laboratories and manufacturers with detailed information on testing. The responsible committee is Subcommittee UK 412.7 "LWL-Verbindungstechnik und passive optische Komponenten" ("Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive optical components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
