Fibre optic links can be found everywhere in the modern transmission technology for telephones, DSL and mobile communication. Ceramic split sleeves serve as quality influencing components in couplings for fibre optic plug-in connections. The purpose of this part of IEC 61300 is to identify weaknesses in these sleeves which could lead to early failure of the components. The screen testing method of this deformable split sleeve of the coupling is described in this part of IEC 61300. The aim is to improve quality and the selection of sleeves which allow a coupling service life of more than 20 years. The standard provides manufacturers and test laboratories with security regarding the specification of the test and serves as a reference for quality assurance. The standards for the performance (IEC 61753) and the CENELEC standards of the EN 50377 series refer to the standards of the IEC 61300 series. The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 412.7 "LWL-Verbindungstechnik und passive optische Komponenten" ("Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive optical components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
