This part of IEC 60793 contains the general specifications for both multimode and singlemode optical fibres. The categorization of multimode and single-mode optical fibres according to their refractive index parameter, the so-called g value, into the four main categories A1, A2, A3 and A4 (framework specification) and their classification into their sub-categories dependent on the core diameter, cladding diameter, coating diameter and numerical aperture (family specification) are described. The categories for class B and class C single-mode fibres are also explained. This type of category results from the wavelength or wavelength range for which a fibre is used and other properties such as dispersion shifted and resistant to bending. In the normative annexes standards representing the framework and family specifications are listed in detail.
