This European Standard describes a method to determine the aerobic biological activity using a self-heating test. This method is applicable to composted material. Self-heating in a Dewar vessel is measured and the maximum temperature is taken into account, whereby the temperature is an indicator of the state of aerobic biological activity. This European Standard is based on the German preliminary standard DIN V 11539. With respect to DIN V 11539:2007-06, the normative references have been deleted, the results of the European interlaboratory trial for validation of the procedure have been incorporated and the test apparatus has been illustrated in a figure. Furthermore, the classification into rotting degrees by means of the temperature maximum has been deleted and the standard has been brought into line with the currently valid design rules. The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 057-03-01 AA "Bodenverbesserungsmittel und Kultursubstrate" ("Soil improvers and growing media") at DIN.
This document replaces DIN V 11539:2007-06 .
