This European Standard describes the basic design of a pipe-in-pipe diverter and specifies the testing requirements and the application of explosion diverters. This European Standard applies for dust/air explosive atmospheres only. An explosion diverter is used to divert explosions propagating through ducts. In German-speaking areas, the use of the term Entlastungsschlot ("Entlastung" meaning "discharge" or "relief") has become common over the years. However, in this standard the term Explosionsschlot ("explosion diverter") has been used, keeping in line with international usage. It will reduce the risk of flame transmission. When designed appropriately, these devices prevent flame jet ignition and pressure piling in connected protected enclosures. They will reduce the risk of flame transmission. As a test standard it is primarily directed at test institutes. This European Standard deals in particular with product safety aspects. It has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide a means of conforming to essential requirements of the New Approach Directive 94/9/EC of 23 March 1994 on equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX). The committee responsible for this standard is NA 095-02-01 AA "Explosionsschutzeinrichtungen (außer Flammendurchschlagsicherungen)" ("Devices for explosion prevention and protection (except flame arresters)") at DIN.
