The DIN IEC/TS 61851-3 series describes the requirements for equipment for wired charging inside and outside light electric vehicles and the corresponding descriptions of the charging interfaces. In this series the term "light electric vehicle" was deliberately chosen, which cannot be firmly assigned to specific vehicle registration categories. Thus this series describes possible charging interfaces for small vehicles without specifying which vehicle categories should be charged with which charging technology. Thus this series can be applied to electrically-powered two- and three-wheeled vehicles of classes L1 to L7 as defined by ECE-TRANS-WP29-78r2e and all electrically-powered or assisted bicycles (electric bicycles). Based on the European Directive 2014/94/EU and the European standardization mandate M/533, it is envisaged that the charging interfaces described in this series will form the basis for a European publicly accessible charging infrastructure for vehicles of categories L. Part 3-6 describes specific communication parameters of the battery application behavior. In a first step, the IEC 61851-3 series will be published by IEC as an international Technical Specification for a period of three years. Implementation in the VDE body of specifications will take the form of prestandards. The present prestandard does not cover all maintenance-related safety aspects, aspects of electromagnetic compatibility and the equipment on board electric vehicles. The responsible committee is K 353 "Elektrostraßenfahrzeuge" ("Electric road vehicles") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
