This European Standard specifies two test methods to determine the explosion limits of gases, vapours and their mixtures, mixed with air. An air/inert gas mixture (volume fraction of the oxygen < 21 %) can be used as the oxidizer instead of air. In this European Standard, the term "air" includes such air/inert mixtures. This European Standard applies to gases, vapours and their mixtures at atmospheric pressure for temperatures up to 200 °C. As a test standard it is primarily directed at test institutes engaged with the determination of explosion limits. This European Standard deals in particular with aspects of product safety. It has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide a means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 94/9/EC of 23 March 1994 for equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 095-02-09 AA "Kenngrößen für Stäube, Gase und Dämpfe" ("Characteristics for dusts, gases and vapours") at DIN.
