This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for mechanically activated inflatable protectors for motorcycle riders (in the following text called "protectors"). It describes the minimum level of protection, the minimum intervention time, and the minimum coverage to be provided by motorcyclists' protectors worn by riders. The standard contains the requirements for the performance of the protector during an impact and details of the required test methods, requirements for sizing, ergonomics, innocuousness, labelling and the provision of information. The evaluation for mechanically activated inflatable protectors is contained in normative Annex A. Protectors with impact recognition by electronic triggers shall be listed in the future in an Annex B. Motorcyclists' inflatable protectors are devices either embedded within or worn on top of other clothing, which aim to reduce the severity of injuries in case of motorcycle accidents. The performance requirements have been specified to provide the best practical compromise between protection, comfort, and ergonomic requirements. The force levels in the tests do not relate directly to the forces riders are exposed to in accidents. Experiences have shown, however, that products meeting the requirements of this European Standard reduce the frequency and severity of these injuries. Potential users of this standard are testing institutes, certification bodies and manufacturers. This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide a means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 89/686/EEC on "Personal Protective Equipment". This European Standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 162 "Protective clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets". The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 075-05-09 AA "Motorradfahrerschutzkleidung" ("Motorcycle rider protective clothing") at the Personal Protective Equipment Standards Committee (NPS).
