This standard defines essential requirements set out in Annex I of the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This European Standard deals with power operated temporarily installed builders hoists (referred to as "hoists" in this standard) intended for use by persons who are permitted to enter sites of engineering and construction. The hoists serve landing levels and have a cage. This European Standard describes hazards which arise during the various phases in the life of such equipment and methods for the elimination or reduction of these hazards when used as intended by the manufacturer. This European Standard deals with the hoist installation. It includes the base frame and base enclosure but excludes the design of any concrete, hard core, timber or other foundation arrangement. It includes the design of mast ties but excludes the design of anchor screws to the supporting structure. It includes the landing gates and their frames but excludes the design of any anchorage fixing bolts to the supporting structure. This standard includes the German version of EN 12159:2012 which has been prepared by CEN/TC 10 "Lifts, escalators and moving walks" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The national interests during the preparation of the standard were represented by Working Committee NA 060-13-50 AA "Bauaufzüge" ("Builders hoists") of Technical section "Construction equipment and building material machinery" of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM). Manufacturers' representatives and users of builders' hoists, as well as representatives of professional and trade associations are involved in the preparation of the standard.
