This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the new EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This standard deals with power operated temporarily installed builders hoists (hereafter referred to as "hoists") which are intended for use by persons who are permitted to enter sites of engineering and construction. The hoists are serving landing levels, having a carrier designed for the transportation of persons or of persons and materials, guided, ravelling vertically or along a path within 15 degrees maximum of the vertical, supported or sustained by drum driven wire rope, rack and pinion, hydraulic jack (direct or indirect), or an expanding linkage mechanism, where masts, when erected, may or may not require support from separate structures. The standard describes hazards which arise during the various phases in the life of such equipment (see clause 4) and describes methods for the elimination or reduction of these hazards when used as intended. This standard does not describe additional requirements for operation in severe conditions (for example, in extreme climates or strong magnetic fields), lightning protection, operation subject to special rules (for example, in potentially explosive atmospheres), electromagnetic compatibility (emission, immunity), handling of loads the nature of which could lead to dangerous situations (for instance, molten metal, acids/bases, radiating materials, fragile loads), the use of combustion engines, the use of remote controls, hazards occurring during manufacture, hazards occurring as a result of mobility, hazards occurring as a result of being erected over a public road, earthquakes, noise. This standard is not applicable to builders hoists for the transport of goods only, lifts according to EN 81-1:1998, EN 81-2:1998 and prEN 81-3:1999, work cages suspended from lifting appliances, work platforms carried on the forks of fork trucks, work platforms, funiculars, lifts specially designed for military purposes, mine lifts, theatre elevators, special purpose lifts. This standard deals with the entire hoist installation. It includes the base frame and base enclosure but excludes the design of any concrete, hard core, timber or other foundation arrangement. It includes the design of mast ties but excludes the design of anchorage bolts to the supporting structure. It includes the landing gates and their frames but excludes the design of any anchorage fixing bolts to the supporting structure. This standard includes the German version of EN 12159:2000+A1:2009 which has been prepared by CEN/TC 10 "Lifts, escalators and moving walks" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The following changes have been made with respect to DIN EN 12159:2001-01: - the scope has been adapted with regards to noise; - the normative references have been adopted and the bibliography has been supplemented; - the term rated load has been replaced by working load/rated load, clause 3; - general requirements in clauses 5.1 and 5.6.1; - requirements for landing gates, clauses 5.5.5.1 and 5.5.5.2; - requirements for gates, clause 5.6.1.4.1.4; - requirement for overload detection device, clause 5.6.3; - requirements for electric installations, clause 5.9.1, 5.9.2.2, 5.9.4, 5.9.5, 5.9.6.1 and 5.10.5; - clauses 5.9.7.1 and 5.10.7.1.2 have been deleted; - a new clause 5.12 on noise has been added; - tests have been adapted, clause 6; Clause 7, user information, has been adapted; - Annexes A and B have been updated; - an informative Annex ZB on the relationship of this European Standard with the essential requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has been incorporated. The national interests during the preparation of the standard were represented by Working Committee NA 060-13-50 AA "Bauaufzüge" ("Builders hoists") of Technical section "Construction equipment and building material machinery" of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM). Manufacturers' representatives and users of builders hoists, as well as representatives of professional and trade associations are involved in the preparation of the standard.
