Overview

This standard is applicable for industrially manufactured carbon blacks, that is, for blacks which are used in lacquers and similar coatings, printing inks, plastics and other colouring products. Carbon blacks according to this standard are pigments industrially manufactured by pyrolysis and/or thermal fission of carbohydrates and in accordance with the lamp black, furnace black and gas black methods and which have been subjected to oxidative post-treatment, if necessary. The carbon blacks are available as powder or beads. The carbon blacks manufactured according to different methods differ in their colouristic and chemico-physical properties. The requirements and test methods for carbon blacks (lamp black (type A), furnace black (type B) and gas black (type C)) are specified: colour strength, oil absorption number, specific surface area (BET), mean primary particle size, pH value, content of volatile matter at 105 °C, content of volatile components during ignition, ash content, residue on sieve, matter soluble in toluol, black value. The standard replaces DIN 55968-1:1999-10. This standard differs from DIN 55968-1:1999-10 as follows: a) Clause "Terms and definitions" has been incorporated; b) requirements and test methods for the oil absorption figure and STSA (statistical thickness surface area) have been incorporated; c) requirements for the black value have been adapted; d) test methods for the colour strength, the specific surface and the ash content have been changed; e) requirements and test methods for dibutyl phtalate absorption have been deleted; f) normative references have been updated; g) contents have been editorially revised. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 078-00-03 AA "Allgemeine Prüfverfahren für Farbmittel und Füllstoffe" ("General test methods for colorants and extenders") at DIN.
